Dec. 5th, 2007 12:07 amThe fan on my box has started the intermittent jet-engine noises again -
And now the CPU is running at a constant 50-60% when there are no apps open, and topping 100% off and on - something it never used to do.
I'd say "I see a new power supply in my future" -
Except I'm broke.
Great.
Just - great.
Good times, good times...

Date: 2007-12-05 07:31 am (UTC)is it moaning or just running at high RPM? i dont know if you have pets or whatnot, but even without it our find NM dust makes a darn sticky insulating blanket.
a few blasts from a good air duster or even opening the case pointing the right day on a good gusty day can solve many high rpm problems.

Date: 2007-12-05 07:52 am (UTC)Didn't know there were two different fans, thus once again flagrantly displaying my ignorance. I'm good like that.
is it moaning or just running at high RPM?
Um, both...? Not sure how to tell the difference.

Two shed-worthy cats.

Sounds like about the only troubleshooting I can afford. I'll get some canned air and cross my fingers between now and next Tuesday - this baby really needs to hang on for me through finals....!

Date: 2007-12-05 08:02 am (UTC)2, As for the rest of it, dont worry, hardware really is my forte, nearly all computers these days have atleast 2 fans, one inside to move the heat off the CPU cyip and oen in the power supply to vent the case/cool the power supply.
you can test to see if its any particular fan in the back of the case by simply taking a dry soda straw or something like that and stopping the fan (think 3year old playing with a room cooling fan)for a few seconds if the noise goes away thats the noisy fan. sometimes its a case fan or a video card fan or even a HDD cooling fan, so sometimes you can save alot of time and money by narrowing down which one it is by stopping them one by one
3, YaY Kitties!
4, if it is the Powersupply and it craps out and is a relatively normal style i happen to keep a spare onhand. I can probably get you back online. in short order.
