My desktop won't read any flash drive type device right now - I keep getting I/O device errors.  I've tried both my mp3 player and my regular flash drive - both get I/O errors on my home computer, but they both work FINE on other computers, so I know it's not the flash drives, it's my stupid computer that's borked somehow.

I NEED TO RESOLVE THIS because I've got stuff on both flash drives that I have to be able to transfer between computers (class lectures recorded on my mp3 player and homework on my flash drive).

Any help appreciated - this is REALLY shitty timing for this to be happening.  FUCK.

What's the exact error? Something like "Cannot copy $FILENAME. The request could not be preformed because of an I/O device error?"

If so, look for updated chipset drivers for your motherboard.

I don't have time right this second to look it up, but here's where I go when my computer pisses me off...

you dint give us alot of details to work with, i assume windows, (xp?)

installed any new hardware/drivers recently?

its just a guess, either windows has decided to give all your flash drives a inuse drive letter. or the drivers went bad. or your usb controller chip went bad.

you have any other usb devices? usb printer usb mouse? are they working? if yes that controller is working, try that usb port.

if no usb devices work, well you are kinda hosed.. perhaps an upgrade usb card. or re-install the motherboard chipset drivers.

but before you go into all that lets make sure they ar enot being given an inuse drive letter.

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
2. Under Computer Management (Local), click Disk Management.
3. In the list of drives in the right pane, right-click the flash drive and then click Change Drive Letter and Path(s).
4. Click Change, and in the drop-down box, select a drive letter for the new drive that is not assigned to a mapped network drive.
5. Click OK, and then click OK again.
