They're all dying out. Thankfully there's a couple of good ones left, but I think this time next year most of the GOOD trackers will be a thing of the past. And the new ones are going to be a super secret closed community. I'm gonna have to invest in chapstick for invites.
Ah, the trackers themselves aren't gone yet, according to this.
Hell, even if the publicly visible sites go down and the RIAA/CRIA/protectionist-industry-bastards-du-jour claim victory, you'll still be able to find stuff on IRC channels. It's not always as simple, and it's not as quick, but on the plus side IRC filetrading has been going on since before Napster became big and will continue, probably on an indefinite basis.
I've never ventured into the world that is IRC. I feel all kinds of ignant for admitting it, but I don't even really know what it is except that I hear it referred to all the time.
Ya gotta love how this article (http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2007/11/demonoid-torren.html)'s title claims it's "gone for good" while FIVE SENTENCES IN they state the tracker is still active.
Oh well, par for the course from a magazine whose employees can't be arsed to proofread: ". . . it’ll be tough to prove the sites has violated copyrights."
Don't know how the mechanics work, but I think the trackers have been decentralized for a long time - folks who have current dl's will probably be able to complete them if they're kept open, but the ones that are still active will die out after a while since there won't be any way for new folk to access them.
