If I were to ever write a vampire story, I think this would be the way I'd start it:

Pairs of eyes scan the street, a school of silver fish darting in unison.

NOTE: I will never write a vampire story. I do like the image, tho.

I've got this fantastic image of free-floating eyes just.. floating around, scanning. As eyes do.

Maybe you should aim for something a tad more Lovecraftian?

While I acknowledge Lovecraft's influence, I'm not a fan. Reading him is like eating a seven-layer chocolate cake, smothered in hot fudge, topped with syrup, and covered in that nasty, waxy, brittle faux-chocolate shell stuff. Personally, I prefer a nice sliver of prose torte over his gluttenous use of diabetes-inducing language.

But that's just me. ;P
