And in other news:

I got a cheap-ass floor lamp with two fixtures at Wally World over the weekend, and am now fairly accustomed to using the energy-saving bulbs that I earlier decried. They're not as bad in a fixture that directs light up instead of down, although I've further found that the pseduo-60-watt, no-name brand bulbs from the dollar store are actually preferable to the supposedly-JUST-LIKE-SUNLIGHT! 100-watt ones from The Evil W.

Both versions actually only use a fraction of the wattage of a regular bulb (15 and 25, respectively), which is good, but the SUNLIGHT! bulbs cast a harsh, horrifying GLARE over everything no matter what kind of fixture they're in. I'm pretty much just getting by with the pretend-60-watt fixture, which actually has a slightly amber cast that I much prefer to the skull-penetrating bluish evil of the SUNLIGHT! bulb. Truly, they should be used as torture devices.

Anyway, as I was previously used to using only halogen floor lamps with wattage varying from 300-500 per, I'm hoping to see a noticable decrease in next month's utility bill. Also, I've noticed absolutely no difference in the quality of my showers after turning the water heater dial down a full third or more to just above "warm", so again, PNM better reward my thrift by applying the skissors to my next bill, yo.

Das right. Ph33r my mad conservation skillz.

Do they make the sunlight ones in less than 100 watts? That's a lot of light, even in a regular incandescent.

My lamp (that I think is probably like yours) calls for two 100-watt bulbs for the upper section. Bad idea. Even two 60s are too much. Especially with white walls and ceiling.

Nope, I just looked. I only used 100s, but it calls for 150-watt bulbs. That's insane.

Again, though - what I was used to was halogens of comparitively interstellar wattage - what's weird is that they never seemed excessively bright, but really rather soothing. Meh. I dunno. Anyway, I'm getting used to the change, which is all I really need. Interesting coincidence: I heard on NPR just this morning a story about EnergyStar and the stuff they're doing these days. Part of the story was about how if every American household changed just one on their light bulbs for an energy-saver, the country wouls save like a quajillion dollars in just one year. Okay, so I made that number up - but the number they quoted was quite impressive. Not that it'll actually happen or anything, Americans being the egocentric energy whores they are...but it was a nice little fantasy...
