Homework for poetry class:

Student Body

Most of my classes are in this main building
An awkwardly designed glass structure
glass punctuated
hiding a confusion of stairwells
Skinner constructions
We’ve lost men here

Its heartbeat:
a thudding chatter of wheeled bookbags
reluctantly trailing their owners
skipping sidewalk seams

Surrounded by
parking lots, full
frustrated latecomers circle the packed rows
hover like mantas
waiting for their opening to slide in and settle

We collect here
forming a student body
a hydra-headed beast
brought together with a goal to one day split apart
An assembly designed for deconstruction

But things always find a way to cleave
A boy and a girl, truant
The mirrored eyes of classrooms look on
as he arranges strands of her hair
with studious care
